Karl Gernert – music teacher
As co-director and co-owner of Act II Theatre Company (with my wife) I have been teaching music and drama in South Lincolnshire since 2004. Our work takes us to several schools, colleges and places of lifelong learning. In addition to that we have a studio base in Spalding where we run drama and music classes for children and young people six days a week.
Teaching primary school music is to catch children at a time of curiosity and wonder. Through instrument tuition, singing, listening to music critically and even composing their own work, children can access their own creativity and sense of joy that the cultural world can offer; something I also enjoy sharing with my own young son.
Outside of work I can often be found on the corner of a stage playing a bass guitar and doing a spot of singing with local function band: Zebra. When not working I enjoy reading fiction and non-fiction, and I’m currently (slowly) learning to play the bagpipes. I have no sense of smell, I have run the London Marathon twice and I once went to Mexico by mistake!
