Governors

Welcome to our Governors’ section.

Please find below details of how our Governing body is structured, including the names, categories, responsibilities and terms of appointment for each Governor.

Governors

Welcome to the section of the website where you can find out more about the school’s governors, and the work that we do.

Who are we?

There are several categories of governor, appointed by different groups that have an interest in the school.  The categories are Community, Local Authority, Parents, and Staff. All governors have equal status, regardless of how they are appointed.

What do we do?

Our main role is set the strategic direction for the school.

We do this by:

•    approving policies and objectives

•    approving the school budget

•    monitoring and reviewing adherence to policies and progress against the school's budget and objectives

•    appointing, supporting and challenging the Head Teacher

The Governing Body meets regularly to review and monitor how the school is progressing towards its School Improvement Plan. The Governing Body delegates responsibilities to committees or working groups to look at particular issues. Currently we have two committees, Resources and Standards. Standards Committee oversees all aspects or curriculum and pupil progress and attainment. Resources Committee oversees the upkeep of building, staffing and school budget. Both of these committees report to the Full Governing Body and appoint chair persons at each meeting as part of our training program for succession planning for the office of Chair. Other committees are convened as and when necessary in accordance with school policy.

We are committed to providing an excellent environment for all pupils to enjoy during their time at our school.

If you wish to know more, or are interested in becoming a governor, please contact us via the School Office or email amanda.roulstone@sutton-st-james.lincs.sch.uk.

Peter Horsfield (LEA Governor and Chairperson)

After we moved back to this area my son started at the school and I was asked by the then Head if I would be a parent governor. That was in 1991 and I have been a governor at Sutton St James C.P. School ever since! Both of my children attended the school and after they had left I became an LEA representative on the governing body . I enjoy being involved with the school and in my role as a governor I have experienced many changes and challenges in education, both locally and nationally, since 1991 and I am currently serving as chairperson of the Governing Body. My wife, Mrs Sandra Horsfield, is employed as a teacher at Sutton St James School and I work for The University Academy Holbeach, in a part time capacity.

Nathan Mastin (Parent Governor and Vice Chairperson)

I have worked in retail management for over 20 years and joined the governing body in November 2012 as a Parent Governor. I have volunteered in school in various capacities and have held numerous governor roles over the years. I have personal experience and special interest in Special Educational Needs and, in November 2018, I started working in a dedicated Special Needs School, gaining further knowledge, skills and experience in this area. I hope that what I give back now repays the school, in some small way, for what it gave me when I attended when I was young.

Sally Clifton (Community Governor)

Hi, My name is Sally Clifton and I have lived in the village since 2002. My daughter went to this school. I run a small accountancy business and I am the caretaker of the village hall. I am a licensed reader in the church of England and I am completing the final year of an MA in theology, ministry and mission. I also run the church youth club. I have been a community governor since 2014 and I work on the resources committee. I also have responsibilities for safeguarding, pastoral care, British Values, ethnicity and diversity, and polices. I take assembly every week in term time and have officially been OFSTED rated as 'Good' which is an achievement I am very proud of. I also run the after school church club. My daughter received an excellent education and this is my way of giving a little back.

Mrs Sandra Horsfield

I have taught at Sutton St James since 1990 and have seen and experienced a number of changes of management, staffing and curriculum from both sides, as a parent and a member of staff.   I feel this gives me an insight into the needs and ethos of the school, its development and culture.

I have always worked with children and young people and in all the settings I have worked I have always tried to become involved and support wherever I could.

I have been a Staff Governor Representative for the last nine years and have welcomed the opportunity to support and make a contribution to the strategic management of the school during that time. I also serve as part of the Standards Committee challenging and questioning the progress and provision for all pupils of our School.
