Welcome to Robins Class! I hope that you will find this page useful. I will try to answer some questions regarding your child's journey through Year 1, and also provide some useful resources. The page will be updated throughout the year so please keep checking in for new posts.

Wow Day!

Today we have had our first WOW! day to introduce our new topics. The children have been very busy and I hope they are able to tell you all about it. Here are some pictures to jog their memory!

We began our day with planting some bulbs as part of our science plants topic. Look out for the front of school looking a lot more colourful!

We then made delicious scones to enjoy later as part of our local area topic using produce from the local area.

We then went on a walk out of the village and met Mr Gadsden on his tractor and learnt all about his work in the fields surrounding Sutton St James.

Here is the overview for Autumn term showing the topics we are covering

This week has been a busy week as we have got into the swing of being in Year 1! We have done lots of learning including beginning our spiral art project and learning our new song in Music.

Our Year in Robins

We have had a fantastic year in Robins. From local walks to visits to the zoo and aquarium, we have had lots of exciting experiences. Look below to see some of our highlights.

Role play - The Tiger who came to Tea!

The children enjoyed acting out their own version of Tiger that came to Tea - the Tortoise that came to tea. This helped them to plan their writing and use their imaginations.

History of our village

As part of History, we learnt about some of the history of our village. We began with a walk in the village and sketching the village sign.

World Book Day

Trip to Sutton St James Parish Church as part of our RE curriculum

We were fortunate to visit both the parish church and the Baptist church in Sutton St James. We looked for features in the churches and found that - although both are very different - they have many of the same features.

Baby Bunny visit!

We were lucky enough to have some visitors earlier in the year - Bobby's mum brought in some baby rabbits. We learnt all about how they are cared for and we discussed what type of animal they are as part of our animals including humans science topic.

Our trip to Hamerton Zoo!

We had a fabulous day at Hamerton Zoo - we saw so many different animals and even saw a snake and an armadillo up close! The weather was glorious and we enjoyed a lovely picnic in the shade of the tree.

Village walks

Throughout the year we have been on several walks along the lanes around the village. We have linked this to our science work looking at how plants and trees change through the seasons.

Maths - working with fractions

We have been using equipment to help us find halves and quarters of groups of objects. We even wrote on the tables to help us with our learning - luckily it all came off!

Trip to the Deep

What a fabulous day we all had at the deep - we saw so many sea creatures and particularly loved the underwater tunnel - it was great to lie down and get a whole new view.

Learning about growing and changing

As part of PHSE we learnt all about how we change from babies to young children. We were lucky to have some visitors - Jennifer and Archie and we learnt all about what they can do and what they need help with.

Decorating biscuits

As part of our Lighthouse Keepers Lunch topic, we made some iced biscuits just like Mrs Grinling. We then wrote instructions as part of our English.

Book Swap

We enjoyed another book swop with children from Herons class. We enjoyed sharing books together which we had chosen.

Maths - numbers to 20

Science - labelling the parts of our bodies

We have been learning all about William Morris and we are making some class wallpaper!

Year 1 common exception words
